Spinnaker Wreck SP-5065-03 – Review

Today, I’m starting my first watch review with this new Spinnaker Wreck SP-5065 that I received from Spinnaker.

This new Spinnaker Wreck is inspired by ships and planes that sank to the bottom of the sea and have become popular spots for divers due to the growing marine wildlife around the wrecks

The Spinnaker Wreck tries to reproduce what these wrecks can undergo after several years spent at the bottom of the seas.

The work on the case is remarkable for a watch in that price range. The distressed and finished by hand case is really well done (it almost looks like bronze on my model).

The lugs are quite short and plunging so that the watch is only 50mm lugs to lugs while the diameter is 43mm and will be fine to wear also for smaller wrists.

The signed screw down crown with the spinnaker logo shows how much attention to details Spinnaker has given to this watch.

The nice signed crown

Water resistant at 10ATM (330ft/100m) is sufficient for the majority of buyers of this watch. However, a water resistance of 20 ATM would bring an undeniable advantage to it.

The see-through exhibition case adds a certain thickness to the case (thickness 14.5mm) which can be a problem if you want to wear it with a shirt.

Personally, I would have preferred a solid caseback with a beautiful engraving (with a sunken boat for example). Moreover, the movement Seiko NH35 is not the most beautiful to look at. However, Spinnaker had the good idea to make a nice rotor with their logo.

Exhibition Case Back with the reliable Seiko NH35

The aluminium insert on the 60 clicks unidirectional turning bezel is hand treated, abraded and is faded just to be legible enough. The bezel action is firm and precise as it should be. The alignment is perfect and the distressed look is matching the case in a really beautiful way.

While the lens is a clear hardened mineral crystal, the dial underneath has been scratched, etched and again distressed by hand on the base to create a wreck like look. The luminous indexes are applied as well as the logo.

Nice finishes on the dial

While writing this review, I just noticed that the indexes sides are in kind of bronze finish to match with the case (Bravo!!!!!). The logo is applied and also in the same bronze finish. The rest of the litterature on the dial is printed and also looks well made. The date window is at 3 o´clock with a white date on a black background.

The minute hands is in an arrow shape look while the hour hand is more traditional. They are filled with luminous material. The lollipop second hand is orange and also filled with the same luminous material. They are all well finished and match the overall look of the watch.

The Lume is good and allow suitable low light visibility for some hours. Don´t expect a Seiko Prospex diver lume but it´s definitly legible in every “dark” situations. Good Job Spinnaker!

We can see the work on the dial and bezel

The 22mm leather band is made in a hand made water resistant leather and in a distressed look with beautiful white stitches. I have worn the watch for several days in a row and the bracelet is very soft and comfortable.
Cherry on the cake: the signed tang buckle is in the same distressed look as the case.
Homerun made by Spinnaker!!!

The Beautiful buckle with Spinnaker signature

My conclusion about this Spinnaker SP-5065 is that if you’re looking for a watch with that particular look or just a different watch than you can find on the market, you will not be disappointed.

Serious construction, very good finishes (case, bezel, dial, hands), a reliable and accurate movement, a good lume and a fanstatic leather band.

My only really small negative points are about the unnecessary exhibition caseback and the waterproofness that would have deserved to be pushed to 20ATM but these are really very small points vs the quality of the watch.
